# Use Smart Targets

Use historical sales mix to help allocate salesperson targets and adjust the split.

Use **Smart Targets** to help split saved sales channel targets across participating salespeople using historical sales mix. You still choose the dealership and channel goals; Smart Targets helps with the individual split.

## Before you begin

You need permission to edit target settings. Smart Targets also needs at least one completed month of delivered sales. The settings show the available history used for the split.

Check who and which sales channels are included in Targets, and prepare the monthly channel plan in **Plan targets**. See [Set monthly targets](/docs/set-monthly-targets).

## Turn on Smart Targets

1. Open **Targets**, then **Settings**.
2. Find **Smart Targets** and turn on **Use Smart Targets**.
3. Review the salesperson participation switches for the automatic split.
4. Select **Save settings** and check for the saved confirmation.

## Choose who participates

A salesperson must be included in Targets to participate in the Smart split. Leave their Smart participation on to include them, or turn it off to keep their allocation manual.

Target participation and Smart participation are different controls. Excluding someone from the Smart split does not mean excluding them from Targets altogether.

## Review the split

Smart Targets uses historical activity for each salesperson and sales channel to calculate the individual share of the saved channel targets. Units, profiles and GP use their relevant history, so the split does not have to be identical for every metric.

After saving the settings and monthly plan, open **Team** and review each salesperson’s targets. Check that the allocations fit your dealership’s plan before relying on them.

Where your account can edit individual targets, you can adjust values manually using **Edit targets**, then **Save targets**. Review existing manual allocations when changing your plan rather than assuming every value has been replaced by a Smart allocation.

## If Smart Targets is unavailable

Check your editing access and the history message beside **Use Smart Targets**. If there is no completed month of delivered sales yet, use a manual plan until eligible history is available.
